Monkey Hopper

Erucius sp.

Description:

A colorful Monkey Hopper with iridescent yellow abdomen, long green dark mottled hind legs, light pail at tail, black and stylized wings, short stubby antennae and dark eyes with yellow double crossed.

Habitat:

Spotted during a raining morning walk at Kebun Raya Cibodas, a 80ha area above 1.400 metres high, mix of botanical park with big trees & palms and surrounded by rainforest at the foot of Gene volcano, Java - Indonesia, monkey hoppers are often found on foliages around forest fringes, they specialize on eating ferns.

Notes:

The very first time I saw this specimen in Indonesia and a bit different in colour from the ones I spotted before in Malaysia. They also have the odd nickname of “matchstick grasshoppers”, probably because their long hind legs always seem to be awkwardly sized for their bodies. Family: Eumastacidae Genus: Erucius
