Spicebush

Lindera benzoin

Description:

I noticed these buds everywhere when walking through the Old Forest State Natural Area the other day. I only spotted one that had burst open. These were mostly on smaller, low-to-the-ground trees (or shrubs).

Habitat:

Old Forest State Natural Area, Overton Park, Memphis, TN

I've smelled the leaves before, but I hadn't made the connection that these were the same plants. They are really beautiful right now--very subtle but lovely.

I gotta get out into the woods here--I'm missing all the good flowers. I LOVE spicebush. The tiny yellow flowers are beautiful. Did you smell them? Spicy lemon-scented. When the leaves show up, crush one and smell it. The flowers will develop into a bright red fruit.
