Swim very well and climbs trees with ease. It feeds on birds, reptiles, rodents, rabbits and even larger mammals, such as "Agouti" and "Paca". Generally, reproduce during the cold months, with gestation 90-96 days, rising 2-4 cubs per litter. The small cats are then loaded and breastfed by the mother until they are able to follow and hunt alone. The family shelters in hollow logs and caves and each animal lives, on average, 12 years.
Originally found in the Atlantic Forest and other forests of Brazil. Distributed throughout Latin America, is also found in the southern United States. In Brazil, occurs in the Amazon, Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, Pantanal and Caatinga.
This specimen (named "Sheetara") has 4 months, and have bad formation of calcium, and for this, is small for it age. "Sheetara" "temporarily belongs" to my college professor, of Zoology. He also runs a Zoo and, being an employee of the Zoo, on occasion, need to take puppies or animals to care for. This Ocelot for example, was born at the Zoo and is being cared and prepared for be released in the wild. In last photo, my professor of Zoology with "Sheetara".
