Northern Harrier

Circus cyaneus

Description:

A long-winged, long-tailed hawk of open grassland, the Northern Harrier forages by flying slowly low above the ground looking for small rodents. It is one of the few raptors that is sexually dimorphic: the male is white below with a light gray back and hood, the female is mottled in browns.

Habitat:

farmland

Notes:

I finally got a half decent photo of a harrier! Getting quality photos of this beautiful bird was my goal this winter. I didn't get the perfect shot...yet. However, I have had so much fun watching these brazen birds hunt and take on other raptors.
