A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Davidia involucrata
Medium-sized tree. The interesting thing was the flower that from far (and even close) looked like a white leaf. It was only when I saw the flower that had fallen (4th photo) and then, actually reached up to separate the two white leaf-like petals of a flower still on the tree, that I could be certain these were flowers. By the way, what look like petals are actually bracts. Last photo shows leaves.
Commonwealth War-graves cemetery in Alnwick town. Right near the entrance.
If it is an avian species you are seeing for the first time, they call it a LIFER. Is there a similar word for Plants?

That list is wonderful ..I learnt quite a few new terms...I think I qualify as a Dude according to the list...:)
Thanks a lot.
As far as I know, Sukanya, birdwatchers are the only group of nature enthusiasts who have such an extensive vocabulary of invented words or use existing words with invented meanings. I am pretty certain you will have already looked at https://seabrookislandbirders.org/2020/0... I can't think of anything along those lines being used for Plants or any other organisms. As a life-long lover of literature, I have never been keen on "slang", but I admit that I find many of the birdwatchers' terms interesting and I would defend their right to use them.
