New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Kuku)

Perna canalicula

Description:

Mussels to 5 - 8cms. They seem to be plentiful in numbers. On the pylons of a jetty I noticed a huge cluster of baby mussels, approx 200. I hope it is a sustainable industry. Very popular with the locals to make their mussel fritters. Bag limit is 25 mussels per person.

Habitat:

Anchored to the substrate in amongst rocks or on rocky beaches. Pic 2 shows the typical area in which they are collected.
