Golden Orb-Weaver

Nephila pilipes

Description:

This orb-weaving spider is about 5 inches long. It has long spindly black legs with two joints. It also has a black abdomen, with yellow stripes running down its length. Its head is also yellowish-green. The web of this spider was about 5 feet in diameter and 7 feet from the forest floor.

Habitat:

This was found during a mostly dry part of the year. This was found in a secondary rainforest on a sunny day in Singapore. It was given partial shade by medium-size trees above it. About 20 meters away there was a tiny Nephila Pilipes, which may have been the offspring of this specimen.
