Whitebanded Crab Spider

Misumenoides formosipes

Description:

The most colorful crab spider I've seen yet. This spider is bright yellow, orange and deep red. The cephalothorax is light yellow in the center with deep red along the edges. The front two pair of legs are striped yellow and red. The rear two are just yellow. The abdomen is bright yellow, orange and red. Determining the genus is all about the eyes. For this genus, all four of the front eyes are the same size and six eyes are visible from the front. The two posterior laterals eyes are facing sideways. Despite the common name, there does not need to be a white band on the spider.

Habitat:

Lupine species in coast sage scrub
