Populous tremula 'Erecta'
The tree is approximately 7 meters tall. Close to the base of the trunk there are two large splits in the bark that appear to have affected the growth on one side of the tree. Half of the tree has much more abundant foliage than on the other half. The branches as well as the foliage that is present appears healthy.
Tree is located in a mulched bed approximately 2 meters away from a pond. It shares a bed with 5 other trees of the same variety. The trees are all spaced at least a meter apart. The bed is located next to a walking path. Aside from those in this bed there are no other trees in the immediate area that might provide shelter from wind and other weather related concerns.
It seems as though either the damage present on the trunk of the tree or stress to the roots can be responsible for a tree's lack of foliage on one side. On account of the branches appearing relatively healthy and not showing signs of malnourishment, it seems more probable that the symptoms are a result of the damage rather than an issue with the roots. As the damage seems relatively old and has been healed over by the tree, it seems unlikely at this point that the trees condition will worsen.
