Dance Fly

Coptophlebia sp ?

Description:

small hunched fly about 7mm long, thorax has brown stripes, abdomen is pale brown and wings are transparent and clear. The head appears to be white with large dark eyes.

Habitat:

feeding on Momordica balsamina (cucurbit). Bushveld with hot, erratically wet summers and mild, dry winters.

Notes:

The Empididae family are reported to be restricted to temperate regions although the South African distribution map extends to the Botswana border within 5 km of this spotting (this spotting is within Botswana as indicated by the pointer on the map although the legend states otherwise. I'm guessing at the genus and would appreciate some more knowledgeable input
