Empis clausa
"Feathery legs, long proboscis, spots on wing = Empis (Coptophlebia) clausa" -- Isaac Winkler (information from BugGuide)
Backyard - feeding on the flowers of a butterflybush
Thanks, Cindy. I guess it would help if I went and read the BugGuide link that was shared. ;-) So this type of fly is sexed just like the horse fly. (I learned the method and shared it with this spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/380... )
If the eyes touch in the middle, it's a male. If not, it's a female.
Thank you, stho002. So it's the fringes on the legs that tell us it's a female?
