Orange Peel Fungus

Aleuria aurantia

Description:

I was about to pick up what I thought was orange flagging tape or maybe some popped balloon fragments when I realized these were cup fungi! The color was so vibrant and they were just scattered in the gravel, they really didn't even look organic until I bent down close to look at them. They were fairly small (most less than 3cm diameter) with a little "belly button" which was where they were anchored to the ground.

Habitat:

Gravel pathway near a stream on a public walking trail
