Clerodendrum intermedium
Clerodendrum intermedium Cham. (a member of the subfamily Ajugoideae, one of four subfamilies transferred from Verbenaceae to Lamiaceae), Kasopangil (local name), is an erect, branched, shrubby or half-woody plant, 1-2 m tall. Stems are green; leaves ovate, 9-20 cm long, with pointed tip, heart-shaped base, and shallowly toothed margins; flowers are odorless, bright red and slender; stamens 2 cm long, red or purplish; fruit fleshy, blue when ripe, depressed-rounded, about 1 cm in diameter. Photos #3-6 of the fruits also show the Kasopangil with other plants and their leaves, including a weedy climber entwining it. Photo #2 shows the actual leaves of the Kasopangil.
Mount Makiling Forest Reserve in Los Baños, Laguna. A Philippine-native, it is common in thickets, secondary forests, and damp places, at low and medium altitudes throughout the Philippines. It also occurs in Taiwan, Borneo, Celebes, and Sumatra.
