Blue Morpho

Morpho achilles

Description:

large butterfly, 5" wingspan, in rough condition

Habitat:

Colombia Amazon

Notes:

This huge butterfly was flying around the top of a traditional open air thatch hut. For some reason it couldn't find its way out and would just fly around and sometimes land low enough to get a photo.

@Fyn: Take a look at this one and compare the eye spots with the ones in Dan's Morpho: Important is the size of the spots and the distance between the spots. They are different in Dan's and Peleides.

I don't know, Dominik... It looks the other way around to me. What do you think?

I know it's pretty worn but I'm going to go with that ID, thanks bayucca.

I think this one is Morpho achilles. The spots on this one are too small for being Morpho helenor and Morpho helenor peleides.
But yours is quite worn, so ID is tricky anyway.

Yeah, very similar. I know there are many species of blue morpho but it does look a lot like that one.
