Common bladder moss, pear moss

Physcomitrium pyriforme

Description:

A small moss with variable but distinctive oblate spheroid (or pear-shaped, hence it's species name, pyriforme) sporophyte capsules. The sporophytes can grow so densely that the gametophytes can be difficult to see.

Habitat:

This moss prefers open, sunny areas, often in areas recently disturbed by fire or construction.
