Red-necked Parrot

Amazona arausiaca

Description:

one of two parrots endemic to Dominica, known locally as the Jaco

Habitat:

rainforest

Notes:

I tried very hard to photographs of both endemic parrots in Dominica and I thought I had, as they look very similar. In the end though, it turns out all my photos were of the Jaco and none were the Sisserou or Imperial Parrot. After Hurricane David wreaked havoc on the island in 1979, many of the parrots natural fruit trees were destroyed. It was after this that they developed a taste for citrus fruits and consequently now they are a pest to farmers. They are strongly protected so there is nothing farmers can do. I caught this parrot in an orchard getting a last meal just before dusk.

Yes, where we live, they fly down to Cotton Hill above Portsmouth to eat in the agricultural lands then fly back to the Diablitons at dusk.
