Rusty Blackbird

Euphagus carolinus

Description:

Rare migrant to California.
Similar to the Brewer's Blackbird but more related to the Grackles. Longer bill with slightly down curved. Pale stripe over the eye. Rusty colored feathers and pale eyes.

Habitat:

Swamps and wet forests. This one was found on slough that has flooded trees and the slough empties into the ocean.

Notes:

This was a single bird and not flocking with other birds including Blackbirds. It has been in the same spot so far for weeks. This bird has been confirmed by other birders in the area.

Yes I do. Not only did I report it, it's how I found it. If you look at the location to these birds we shouldn't even have any.

Hey Jellis, great spotting! Do you use ebird at all? This month they are really interested to have users submit their Rusty Blackbird sightings to get a better idea of their habitat use during spring migration. This spotting would help their research!
