Bumblebee Orchid

Ophrys bombyliflora

Description:

Small flower of about 14mm diameter and 12cm tall. The name is somewhat misleading, as this orchid attracts males bees of the Eucera genus. Pollination takes place when the male bees try to copulate with the flowers, spreading the polen.

Habitat:

Among coastal scrub on limestone cliffs.
