A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Dacelo novaeguineae
It is a large robust kingfisher with a whitish head and a brown eye-stripe. The upperparts are mostly dark brown but there is a mottled light-blue patch on the wing coverts.
This pic of my family 'Totem-bird' was taken at the east-end of Mullers Lagoon, Bowen, Q. Au., early am on a walk. The bird was getting bugs from the bark of the large trunk of the tree, which is what caught my eye.
These birds are 'Kings' of a specific area; From ground level to tree-tops, where the larger birds of prey take over. They will take other's eggs & do kill & eat babies in nests, if no other prey is at hand.
