Coprinus plicatilis is now known as Parasola plicatilis to reflect our better understanding of how it is related to other similar mushrooms. It is a possibility but unfortunately there are tons of little mushrooms which look just like it. Most are in the genus Parasola now, but some Coprinellus and Coprinopsis species also look similar. Without careful microscopic analysis it is hard to say for sure which species it is. A lot of people just call them all Parasola/Coprinus plicatilis because they don't have the equipment to suggest otherwise, which is fine for the purposes of a site like this, but not always scientifically accurate.

Lipase, I'm just a Hobbyist, unfortunately I don't think there's much work in mycological taxonomy. I spend lots of time reading about mushrooms though, something about them takes my interest. And looking through mushrooms on here helps me learn :-)

Although often grouped with Ink caps Parasola species tend not to be so deliquescent.

Coprinus plicatilis?

yeah that looks likely after quick google search. I remember seeing pictures of some similar-ish looking Coprinopsis ones. If it were an 'inkcap' though it might be deliquescing at this point... Once again thanks for all your suggestions Gully. much appreciated. are you just a hobbyist or working in mycology?

Yup, António's right - definitely a Coprinoid. I'd say in the Parasola genus. You'll have a hard time getting it to species without microscopy.
