Clammy Ground Cherry

Description:

Common in the same areas as the Indian Blanket. Found along roadsides and in grassy areas. A low growing plant of the Tomato family- Solanaceae. The flowers are like little yellow lampshades, the seed pods look like Chinese lanterns and inside the seed pod is a fruit that looks like a tiny tomato or cherry tomato. Fruits are called husk cherries, ground cherries, Physalis or sometimes tomatillos. Even though this is a wildflower, the fruits are still edible and are supposedly a little bitter tasting.
