Craterellus fallax
Gray to black vase-shaped fungi growing in a cluster. Upper edge of "vase" folds over and has some dark scaling. Underside is a dull gray with orange tint throughout. Spore print pale orange.
Growing in clusters on slightly disturbed leaf litter on a slope surrounded by lots of fallen and rotting logs. Nearby sweetgum and oak trees.
I am so VERY excited that my hubby and I found a patch of these mycorhhizal fungi today while hiking our land. This is actually our very first chanterelle find in general (we have only been serious mushroomers since early summer), and we just happened to find one that is the most difficult to spot! We almost missed them! As you can imagine, I was squealing with joy when I realized what we had found! For those who are curious, yes, these will be our dinner this evening!
