Eastern bluebird

Description:

A small thrush with bright-blue breeding plumage, with a rosy colored breast.

Habitat:

This male bluebird was observed in close proximity with an American robin, both perched high in a maple tree. This is in a suburban neighborhood within the drainage basin for the Tennessee River. A small tributary, Bradford Creek, is nearby. There are native deciduous trees and evergreen trees in the area, and also cultivated landscaping at homes in the area. Gray squirrels, raccoons, opossums, rabbits, deer, foxes, coyotes, and many species of birds are in the area.

Notes:

The bluebird in this photo, and the robin with him, were heard making excited calls, and thrashing about high in the maple tree. It should be noted that both birds have a nest with young nearby. The bluebird and his mate nest in a bluebird house mounted on a fence, only about 10 feet from a rose bush, where the robins have a nest with four chicks in it.
