Eastern Rat Snake (Juvenile)

Pantherophis alleghaniensis

Description:

The juvenile rat snakes look nothing like their parents that are solid black on top and white & black on their bellies. They are often mistaken because of their pattern for our venomous Copperhead snake and sadly killed. Maybe that look-a-likeness helps serve as a defense mechanism for the babies to make others think they are venomous.

Habitat:

urban schoolyard
