Western Diamondback Rattlesnake

Crotalus atrox

Description:

The Western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) is a heavy bodied snake with a triangular shaped head. There are two dark diagonal lines on each side of its face running from the eyes to its jaws. It has dark diamond-shaped patterns along is back. The tail has black and white bands just above the rattles.

Notes:

This was a controlled photoshoot with a wild caught snake from earlier in the day. This is not a captive snake, and was photographed within enough proximity of its capture location to still be considered its habitat. Rattlesnakes are common residents of Sand Dunes near the San Antonia and Galveston Bay systems.

Thanks Tom, the photographer I'm shooting with got a really nice Silhouette of the snake in front of the sun raised up in an S (I was busy getting the snake up and angry!). I'll have one more session with this guy before he goes back home. Can't wait to see what the next couple of days produce.

Excellent Cody! Nice work with the fill flash and the setting sun behind the snake.
