Unfortunately didn't count grooves or any important identification factors in the field.
Chaparral near a small stream under log.
I realize that there are many species of slender salamanders in California and I'm not sure what kind this is.

I'm thinking that is a California Slender...Batrachoseps attenuatus. But it could be a Reticulated slender based on its location. I love salamanders, but soooo many of them only have slight variations between species.
Awesome little guys!
This little guys are all over the place in my backyard, which is fairly damp most of the year. Whenever we move wood or rocks we can usually find at lest 3-5 of these little guys here and there. While we have never found them together they do appear to like living in close proximity to each other. We are careful to watch for them as we do any work in the planters or around woodpiles or large rocks and when we do find them we try to replace them as close to where they are found when we have completed our work.
