Mahaleb cherry ( Μαχλεποκερασιά)

Prunus mahaleb

Description:

Prunus mahaleb, the mahaleb cherry is a species of cherry tree. The tree is a Mediterranean native, and it is very common in Greece, as growing in the wild, or as cultivated for the mahaleb spice which is obtained from the seeds inside the cherry stones. The ground mahaleb is used mainly in the preparation of the traditional Tsoureki (a sweet, egg-enriched bread), mainly used in Xmas and Easter, but it is very popular all year round. The pictured tree with fruits were spotted in the yard of an old monastery, in Othrys mountain, Greece. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsoureki
