Pycnostysanus azaleae?
a fungus growing on the buds of rhododendron ponticum. It seems now (after zooming in on the leaves) it was also growing on the leaves. A lot of the leaves in the thicket had brown spots all over which I thought was probably 'Leaf Spot' (see this spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/215...). Perhaps the leaves in this spotting were already damaged by leaf spot and that gave the white fungus a hold or perhaps the brown spots were caused by the white fungus in the first place?). The second photo shows a bud that looks like it was going to turn into leaves, I don't know what the flower buds look like.
cy - no sample. here's where I got my information and ID from: http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/prof...

cheers gully! I've suddenly got interested in Rhododendron diseases and fungi since I've been volunteering chopping them down and burning them (they're a destructive invasive species here in the UK)
Cool!
I have no idea, but it looks spot on :-)
