Phytocrene

Phytocrene bracteata

Description:

huge spiky fruit, almost the size of a soccer ball and very heavy. was growing on a vine, but the leaves were high up in the canopy and I couldn't see them. similar to Opuntia cacti, there are small spines covering this fruit which are irritating to the skin. I found this out the hard way!

Habitat:

tropical rainforest, coastal

Notes:

I only saw this fruit at Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve, but I did spot it a few times there.

Chun, you may be right, could be a wild durian. I don't know that much about them. Tabris, as for the local name, I don't know it. My guide didn't have a name for it.

BTW, can you add the local name for this one?

Look like long-spike durian.
But "growing on a vine"?
And "small spines covering this fruit which are irritating to the skin"?
Never heard durian described like that. Hope you can ID this one.
