Harvestman and Prey

Opiliones

Description:

A large Harvestman (3 mm body) was moving across a wooden bench carrying a fly. I had never thought of them as predators or scavengers before, but some are. I accidentally touched one of his legs and he dropped his supper and ran. I was surprised to see that he had actually been carrying 2 different insects: what looks like a Bibionid fly (black) and a little green bug (last picture).

Habitat:

Garden at night, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

The reference article cited is very interesting about Harvestmen spiders in general and includes information about predation and/or scavenger behavior in some Opiliones.
