You are probably referring to the House Sparrow which is widespread throughout India, the male being similar but it has a grey crown and no cheek spot. The female House Sparrow is a paler brown with no black markings. Male and female Tree Sparrows are both the same but unlikely to be seen in India except in the extreme north.
