Vigna unguiculata subsps. sesquipedalis
A gloriously monstrous vining bean! Grows fast, aggressively, with luxurious foliage . Flowers are a lovely purple. The beans are nearly what the name implies- this variety will grow well over 24" long ! About diameter of a pencil, firm, with an almost nutty-meaty flavor.
Native to SE Asia, where I got to know them. They like warm weather.
Delicious! Try stir frying them with garlic and a tiny smidge of sesame oil , or add them to a beef, fish , or other seafood soup. These are easy to grow , and germinate in about a week! They like warm weather , and once they get going, they will easily grow 6" a day! Provide a very large, sturdy trellis ( my trellis is 8 feet tall, and it's already cascading over it..!) or fence with chicken wire. As long as you keep harvesting the beans, it will keep producing until a frost gets it. Not tolerant of even a mild frost . I grew them in Pennsylvania from June to mid-October. Here in Florida, I started the seeds indoors last week of February.
