Woodflowers typically crested with vibrant cockscombs (spiky bundles of flowers). In fact celosia is derived from the Latin Kelos meaning burned, denoting the flowers firey appearance.
Wide spread genus found throughout the world they are tropical/sub-tropical plants. They are hearty and grow in most any climate warm enough to support them.
They are said to have many medicinal effects perhaps most notably as a treatment for intestinal worms. In many regions of Africa and Asia it is actually eaten as a leafy vegetable (often compared to spinach).
