The Common Loon, Great Northern Loon or as it's known in Eurasia, the Great Northern Diver, can range from 61 to 100 cm (24–40 inches) in length with a 122–152 cm (4–5-foot) wingspan. Like all divers it is a specialist fish-eater, catching its prey underwater, diving as deep as 200 feet (60 m).
It breeds in North America, Greenland, Iceland, and Great Britain. Nests are usually placed on islands, where ground-based predators cannot normally access them.
There were at least 20 migrating Common loons on the reservoir where I found this.

Thanks. I had to sit quietly for several hours before I was able to get this photograph. It was worth the wait..
