Southeast Asian water monitor

Varanus salvator macromaculatus

Description:

This subspecies of the water monitor inhabits Singapore (and parts of nearby countries). The species is a common large lizard native to southern Asia. They range from "Sri Lanka and India to Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, and various islands of Indonesia, living in areas close to water."

Habitat:

This monitor was observed near the nature center of the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve (Singapore) in close proximity to a pond.

Notes:

Sungai Buloh Wetland Reserve is awash in these monitors. I saw at least 6 individuals in 2 hours. When I returned this specimen (?) was sitting in a nearby pond with only its head above water. (Map marker not precise).
