mourning cloak

Nymphalis antiopa

Habitat:

Douglas-fir-western redcedar forest, within a patch of alder near a snowmelt stream.

Notes:

Although patches of snow were present, and the day was overcast, this individual was observed flying and basking. The first butterfly of the season for me.
