Pig

Sus scrofa domesticus

Description:

Our two pigs, Wilbur and Deirdra. Deirdra is older and slightly bigger; she's the boss!

Habitat:

A lovely, large plot of land with lots of mud! In summer, the pigs sit under a shade-cloth in a big hole full of water. This hole is near their water trough. The pigs have discovered that if they sit in their trough and bob up and down, the water is displaced and will flow into their hole! Then the trough automatically fills up. Very clever pigs! If the weather is too hot then we spray the pigs and the shade-cloth with cool water. The pigs have plenty of room to roam and dig around with their snouts for grubs and worms and bugs and plant roots. Both pigs are fed lots of scrap food (not meat! They are vegetarians) that is left over from students' snacks and lunches.
