Killdeer Chicks

Charadrius vociferus

Description:

The killdeer is brown with a white chest and has two black bands around the neck. It also has beautiful russet tail plumage when tail feathers are spread. The mother killdeer in the picture above is pretending to be injured. An adaptation that the species has developed to lure predators away from nests. The babies in the picture above are about 2 days old I think.

Habitat:

Grassy field-like yard. The nest is only a bare spot on the ground.
