Libythea celtis
Medium to small butterfly. The upperside ground colour is rich silky brown. The fore wing has the cell filled with a broad orange-yellow streak which is subapically deeply indented above. Underside ground-colour : fore wing brown, apex pale purplish irrorated with minute dark transverse striae and dots, orange markings as on the upperside but paler; hind wing uniform pale purplish irrorated with minute dark dots and transverse striae. Antennae, head, thorax and abdomen dark brown; beneath, palpi, thorax and abdomen concolorous with the tint of the underside of the hind wing. There were millions of them all over the trees in that area today (photo 4, but unfortunately on the photo doesn't seem so impressive as when you are in the middle of a cloud of this wonderful butterflies). Photo 5 is showing an young one, just left its cocoon.
Southern Europe; Asia Minor. Also in the Chitral ranges.
Other names: Nettle-tree Butterfly.
Thank you, I read all about N.American version but coudn't find our without Jopy ;) yeah, american snout has a bit less intense colors, more grayish...
Wonderful Series. The North American version of this is called the American Snout - L. carinenta. They are very similar, but seldom show as much of the colorful forewing or upperside as you have shown here.
