Killdeer

Description:

The Killdeer, Charadrius vociferus, one of the only inland plovers, is common around areas where dirt has recently been turned up. It has two black bands across its upper breast, red eyes, and a light brown coloration on the head and wings. The beak is black and fairly large in proportion to its body. In photos two and four, you can see the chick Killdeer, which was running around! You can see the Killdeer preforming a broken wing distraction display in photo six. This is done to distract a potential predator from the nest and chicks, and towards the adult bird. I must have been closer to the nest than I though to cause this reaction. The bird commonly shrieks in flight, faintly similar to that of a hawk.

Habitat:

This Killdeer and its chick must have been nesting in this area which was quite muddy and upturned due to the farm machinery which turns up the corn fields adjacent to this area.
