Black ant

Camponotus compressus

Description:

I spotted this colony of black ants in my college courtyard. They are large jet-black in color with length 6 to 16 mm and brownish legs. They have 2 large antennae and a prominent shining abdomen. They usually work in groups and work at all times of the day, carrying things back and forth to their nests. They have a nasty bit that is very painful.

Habitat:

They are one of the most abundant ant species in South India.
