Golden Shower Tree, or Amaltas

Cassia fistula

Description:

This medium sized tree sheds its leaves to reveal its skeleton branches; then is coated in green with an absolutely stunning contrast of golden flowers in a cascade. Once the pollination is over, the fruits dangle like sticks earning it the name Bandar (monkey)-Lathi (stick)

Habitat:

Amaltas trees line avenues in India. Individual trees are planted in community gardens.

Notes:

Birds love the Amaltas. I have seen the Oriental White eye, Grey hornbill, Blossom-headed parakeets etc spends hours on this tree.
