Great Blue Heron

Ardea herodias

Description:

This Great Blue Heron sits by the water in my back yard almost every day, but rarely sticks around for pictures. Their vision and hearing gives them great awareness of the environment around them, allowing them to detect prey, predators and apparently photographers with ease.

Habitat:

Edge of large fresh water pond.

Notes:

This guy sits on the old dock across the pond from this location almost every morning before moving on to the rest of the pond, usually making it around to my yard later in the afternoon. He's had this routine since January of 2013. There are a few more Herons that seem to call this pond home, and sometimes their territorial disputes & other interactions can be seen and head. I like to call this dude "Harry" just because he's around so often - why not give him a name? lol
