Amanita muscaria
This is an emerging fruiting body of the fly agaric. It appears like two spheres separated by a narrow neck, with the lower sphere a little wider than the one above. The upper part is the cap. It is covered by a cracked white universal veil which extends below to cover the entire fruiting body. The pale orange colour of the emerging cap can be seen through the veil.
Spotted on grass at a nature reserve with Pine and Eucalyptus trees.
The thicker lower portion will become the volva, when the maturing cap grows and the stipe lengthens, causing the veil to tear. Remnants of the universal veil are later seen as white crumbly patches on top of a red cap as in a previous spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/115... Order: Agaricales Family: Amanitaceae
