Red Bellied Watersnake

Nerodia erythrogaster ssp. erythrogaster

Description:

This snake usually has more of a red coloring on the belly, but this individual was in heavy shed. The back is a dark brown or grey and almost patternless. Though non-venomous, watersnakes are known to be aggressive and repeated biters if you attempt to handle them.

Habitat:

Mixed forest and wetland swamp.

Notes:

This individual was none too happy about me attempting to photograph it. It had a damaged right eye and was in heavy shed.
