Terrapene ornata ornata
Another mobile upload! Pretty sure this is a box turtle...
Man, I'm really torn on this one too! I went online and looked and ornate and 3 toed. I will check and see if I have any other pics that are worth posting. Most came out really blurry!
This one is interesting! The three-toeds can have plenty of colorful patterns on their shells (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/114...). The markings for an ornate tend to be very distinguished (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/120...). I've also heard of Eastern Box Turtles occasionally finding their way across the Mississippi and hybridizing with their 'cousins'. Might be best to label this one just a Box Turtle, Terrapene carolina. :-)
I would be willing to agree with Ashley. Male three toed turtles are certainly more ornate than females, and may have patterning, though the patterning is far bolder on an Ornate. I felt this guys pattern was a bit faint for an ornate, but not out of the ordinary for that species.
The thing I would be most interested in see would have been his plastron (belly). That would have confirmed this animals identity very quickly.
It is uncommon for Three-toed Box Turtles to have any patterning on the shell. Ornate Box Turtles have lines radiating from one point on each scute on the shell, just like this guy has.
Oh man, I don't remember! I know the front feet had 5 toes... I think. I didn't have my good camera so I was having my boyfriend take pics with my phone. Horrible quality! Sorry! ...but cool to use the mobile app finally! You can kind of see his back toes in this pic... I'll check out the links you provided too!
how many hind toes? It looks like a Three toed.
There are only two box turtles in Missouri. Three toe and Ornate.
