Spinner Dolphin

Stenella longirostris

Description:

The spinner dolphin is a small dolphin found in off-shore tropical waters around the world. It is famous for its acrobatic displays in which it spins along its longitudinal axis as it leaps through the air. It is a member of the family Delphinidae of toothed whales. In certain regions, such as Hawaii, dolphins spend the daytime resting in shallow bays near deep water then at dusk they travel offshore to feed.

Habitat:

A pod of Spinner Dolphins playing in the waters off Kahe Point (Electric Beach), Oahu, Hawaii.

Notes:

Another set of dolphin pictures from 2012, a year when we actively pursued such encounters by kayaking out to the dolphins and then jumping in with them with our snorkel gear. The water was not as clear on this day, and the dolphins were shying away from us so the pictures didn't turn out as good as in my other sets.
