Queensland fruit fly

Bactrocera tryoni

Description:

Chocolate and yellow colours with iridescent wings.

Habitat:

On a sacred Basil.

Notes:

It was like a sudden infestation and a couple of these insects began to explore me! Trying to shrug them off I accidentally crushed one..I wish I hadn't...it stank so bad...it really was an awful smell. I saw these in Delhi but may have caught sight of them in Kolkata once (no photographs or proof yet, though) All thanks to John La Salle for pointing me in the right direction.

This is not a bee but a fruit fly in the family Tephritidae

Many of these species can be quite important agricultural pests.
