Polytrichum juniperium Hedw.
The Juniper-leaved Hair Moss are robust, wiry mosses of upright growth. This moss often forms extensive areas of attractive close "turf". When fertile, the tips of the plants are surmounted by a rosette of brightly colored bracts which surround the sexual organs; these look like tiny flowers.
On heathland, particularly where the soil has at some time been burnt or denuded of its vegetation.
Stonewalls and on ground.
