European Alder Spittlebug

Description:

Female - Brown overall colouration, darker towards the tip and two black marks along each side, split by a pale patch. (This spotting has two pale patches). Head is wide with two large compound eyes (pale with reddish stripes) and two simple eyes known as ocelli. The snout is pointed and the head is keeled along it's middle (median). Brown mottled legs with spines on the rear tibiae and dark tarsi Male - slightly smaller than the female

Habitat:

Meadowland and mixed woodland

Notes:

The larvae of the European Alder Spittle Bug live in a foamy mass, commonly called 'cuckoo spit'. It is quite common in all Europe.
